 Word Choice -appropriate & expressive
Immigrant parents attend English as a second Language classes 3 times per week on-site at P.S. 131. Instruction promotes English language and literacy development. The instructor uses a multi-disciplinary approach to instruct mixed levels of students that include adults who lack reading and writing skills, even in their first language. Vocabulary development is central to instruction. The instructor introduces vocabulary thematically related to the lessons and experiences of the adult learners. The Documenting Literacy at Home project created an opportunity for students to explore and learn new vocabulary to describe the objects and tell the stories depicted in their photographs.
