Program Spotlight

Project STAR offers young people a pathway to achieving their aspirations by helping them prepare to attend college and ultimately pursue rewarding careers.  STAR helps young people overcome barriers to obtaining a college education by giving them the resources and support they need to reach their potential.

Individual Advisement. Students meet with staff throughout the year to discuss high school preparation, college preparation, the college admissions process, and financial aid issues.  Upon enrollment in the program, students take an assessment test to determine their academic skill level.  Program staff also monitor report cards to ensure that students are academically on track.

SAT Preparatory. Throughout the year SAT classes are offered during after school hours.  Trained math, writing,  and verbal SAT teachers and tutors will conduct the sessions and offer follow up and subject specific support.  Staff will also assis youth in registering for the SAT I and II exams.

Resource and Technology Center. Technology is integrated into Project STAR allowing students to do research on colleges, scholarships, and internship opportunities.

College/University Visits. Students involved in Project STAR participate in college tours of local campuses as well as campuses in the Northeast.  College trips help participants envision college in their futures through personal insight and comparison of different college campuses.

Tutoring Program.
Throughout the year, our tutoring provides regular assistance to students who need it in subjects such as math, science, history, and foreign languages.  Students also receive special tutoring sessions in preparation for the Regents exam and for the SAT.

College Prep Worskshops. Students are offered workshops on topics susch as how to choose a college, how to pay for colege, and how to prepare for college.

College Fair. Each year Project STAR holds a college fair in conjunction with the Brooklyn Borough President's Office.  The fair offers an opportunity to hundreds of high school students in Brooklyn to meet with colege representatives.  Workshops are also conducted at the fair for youth and their parents to help prepare them for college.  Scholarship awards are also announced at the fair.

2007. This year 15 students and staff from Project STAR visited Goucher College, the University of Maryland, American University, Howard University, the US Naval Academy, Temple University, and Swarthmore College.  The youth explored what college is like and what their options are and gained a clearer idea of their goals for the future and how they can meet those goals.
