Mechanics
     -grammar & the finer points

Conventions and mechanics are essential aspects of writing.* Initially the students were encouraged to write free of the constraints of "correct" punctuation and grammar. It was not until students had multiple opportunities to write that an emphasis was put on conventions and mechanics. By using the student writing as a diagnostic tool, the topics for mini-lessons were selected. Using worksheets from commercial textbooks as well as teacher created worksheets, intentional instruction focused on one topic at a time. The students then returned to their work and edited using their newly acquired knowledge. At intervals, mini-lessons were presented while students continually worked on their writing.
