Learning Centers

The Learning Centers provide enriching academic activities that lend educational support and foster a love of learning after school and during the summer.

During the academic year, after school staff use an innovative curriculum which children enhances children’s literacy as well as their math and science skills.  An appreciation for the arts is developed through a variety of activities including dance, theater, painting, and music.  In collaboration with schools, staff plan activities that are aligned with city and state standards.  Thematic curriculum is planned around students’ needs and interests.  Volunteers and collaborators from outside agencies play a key role in our after school services.

PRY summer camp is one of the free summer camps in the area. The goal of the program is to provide a blend of educational, cultural, and recreational activities for youth during the summer months. The camp services low income youth from the community who are from 5 to 12 years old for six weeks during the summer months.  Most of the campers participate in other PRY programs during the year.  The camp also provides job training and employment through the Summer Youth Employment Program.

Staff work in concert with art and drama specialists to bring compelling and unique learning experiences to the campers. Mornings are devoted to instruction in reading and math skills.  Afternoons provide campers the opportunity to enjoy creative clubs such as drama, cooking, dance and computers.  In addition to traditional sports and outdoor games, summer campers also experience the riches of New York through trips to The Museum of Natural History, The New York Aquarium, South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Children's Museum, Bear Mountain, the Staten Island Ferry, and Prospect Park.
